Career Aspirations

Upon reflection of my time on work placement I now feel like I have a much clearer picture on my career aspirations and where I would like to see myself after graduation. Both of the companies that I worked at for my work placement mainly focused on simple furniture design or rearranging the layouts of rooms and after experiencing doing this kind of work I can safely say that that type of work is not for me as while at both placements I did find the work to a bit repetitive and tedious as I for me personally this type of work just didn't seem very exciting and I also felt like the work felt creatively restrictive. Also, while on work placement, in particular whilst at Neville Johnson I didn't fully enjoy having to work on a job every job. Although at times this could exciting because it meant new designs and new challenges each day it just wasn't something I particularly loved which has made it clearer to me that I would much prefer to work on bigger commercial jobs in my career such as; hotels, shopping centres, airports, restaurants etc. Therefore, after graduation I would much rather work for a company that focuses on commercial design but a company that deals with more than just the furniture that is placed within the building. I would like to have a job that allows me to really be creative and expressive at times and that allows me to be involved in the whole creative process from start to finish. I also know that I would enjoy the challenges that come with working on jobs that are at such a massive scale which is another reason why commercial design really appeals to me. I would also like to have a job that allows me to not just work at the desk all day as when on work placement I did find this to be quite boring and I'd prefer to work in a more social environment and also at a company that allows me to work away from the office, or go on site visits, or deal with clients.

When I have graduated I see myself firstly working either in Manchester or one of the other major cities within the UK but I have also always wanted to work either in another or country or have a job that allows me to travel quite a lot or even both if possible, so one day I do see myself moving somewhere new and working their either for a few years or for the rest of my life. I would specifically love to work in America, not only because I like spending time their but also because their are so many different places, climates and environments to work over in America, plus the biggest companies in the interior design industry are all in America and my end goal would either be to work in one of the biggest companies in the world in a high position or to even own my own company.
