3D Design Principles

This project focused on designing a public interactive installation that imposed positive and negative affects on the public. I focused on the feelings of fear and excitement by creating a obstacle course type installation that played on these emotions. The idea was to make the public feel emotionally connected to the installation and then play on these emotions to affect people in different ways. To inform my design and the feelings I wanted to convey I conducted some visual research around Manchester City Centre, as in theory this is where my installation would be located. I used my visual research to inform my design but not in a literal sense, but instead I used them to see how the angle, size, materials, shapes, structure and lighting made me feel.

Focusing on the idea of emotionally connecting the people to the installation in both a positive and negative way I decided to create an interactive installation that focuses on aspects such as heights, darkness, falling, confined spaces etc. as to some people these will give a negative feeling as dealing with these aspects might make them feel either uncomfortable or scared. However, to other people these aspects will bring a positive feeling creating a sense of thrill, excitement and adventure. To accurately showcase my design I produced a model of the 'obstacle' course suspended high above the ground that consists of four hanging boxes all of which utilise one of aspects mentioned above to create an emotional connection between the user and the installation whether this be positive or negative.
